The Natural Babe's Quick & Easy 4th of July Decor! | Holiday Decor On a Budget

Hey Everyone! For today's blog post I wanted to keep it short & sweet! I recently decorated my home for 4th of July and wanted to share how easy and inexpensive it was! Comment down below what you and your family are doing for 4th of July!

So believe it or not, each of these 4th of July decor pieces were $3 or less! The American flags and the front door sign were from Dollar Tree, all at $1 each of course. The window decals  (2 sets at $1 each) and the lights (being the most expensive at $3) were both from the Target dollar spot, making this decor only $8 total! If you enjoy 4th of July as much as I do or if you just love decorating I hope today's blog post inspired you to get creative and to never let a tight budget get in the way of having some fun!

The Toxic Truth About Fragrance | Why Fragrance & Scented Product are Harmful for Us | Synthetic Fragrance

Hey everyone! I don't know about you, but I love a good smelling candle, body wash, laundry soap and a good smelling home in general! A few months ago though I realized that the conventional scented products in my home were actually very toxic to me and those around me, So today I want to share what I've recently learned about synthetic fragrance and what we as consumers can do about it!

So What is Synthetic Fragrance and is it Really that Bad?
Synthetic Fragrance is a blanket term used to describe the chemicals used to scent our products and companies aren't legally required to disclosure each chemical used to add smell. So when you see the word " fragrance" or "parfum" on any of your products that actually could be one or several of the 3,000 chemicals used as ingredients (2- see references below). One of the main problems with this is "More than 95 percent of the chemicals in synthetic fragrances are derived from petrochemicals. These chemicals include: benzene derivatives, aldehydes, phthalates, and a slew of other known toxins that are capable of causing cancer, birth defects, nervous-system disorders and allergies—some of which are cited on the EPA’s hazardous waste list."(1). These are some scary facts! It gets even scarier with one study showing how many issues people had when using synthetic fragrance, Check it out! "Overall, 34 percent of the population reported one or more types of adverse health effects from exposure to fragranced products. The most common symptoms were: 18 percent respiratory problems; 16 percent mucosal symptoms; 15 percent migraine headaches; 10 percent skin problems; 8 percent asthma attacks; 7 percent neurological problems; 5 percent cognitive problems; 5 percent gastrointestinal problems; 4 percent cardiovascular problems; 4 percent immune system problems; 3 percent musculoskeletal problems; and 1 percent “other.” (2).
How Do I Know if my Products have Fragrance or are Safe in General?
Alright natural babes, this is where we make it really easy and practical! I've got two easy methods to identify these chemicals
  • The first one is to simply read your product's ingredients the two words to avoid are "fragrance" and "parfum" now if you see something with the term "natural fragrance" that is a little better and has more regulation; but the best two options would be for the ingredients to say "essential oils" or to be fragrance free all together ("unscented" is not the same it still often has fragrance in it).
  • The second tip is to use some type of app that can break down the ingredients for you in simple terms! It's 2017 people, the app store is making it easy for us! I love using the app called Think Dirty it's free and you can either scan the product bar code or you can search the product! This app will break it down and give the product a safety rating (0 being best 10 being worst), here's some screenshots of how to use it!

Why are Companies Using These Chemicals and Can WE Do Anything?

For companies synthetic fragrances are often cheaper and easier to use but with these chemicals being so harmful we've got to put an end to this! I've included a petition you can sign and a tweet you can send to your state's representative both are asking that it become a legal requirement for companies to disclosure the chemicals that are used in the blanket terms "fragrance" and "parfum" and to disclosure the chemicals used in general. Check them out and sign them/fill them out if this is something you want to see happen!
EWG.ORG PETITION
SEVENTH GENERATION TWEET YOUR REPRESENTATIVE
Another way to combat this, is to stop using synthetic fragrances in your home. I know for a lot of people it can be overwhelming almost everything in there home has synthetic fragrance.
It wouldn't be fiscally smart to just throw it all out and start from scratch; If you're able to do this I definitely recommend it, but honestly when I first was getting started I didn't do this. I used up what I already had and vowed to never buy those products again. I found budget friendly all natural alternatives and I've linked some below for you, feel free to check out my shop tab for a whole list of all the natural items we use in our home!

Going Natural is Cheaper! | 3 examples of When using Natural Cleaners Will Save you Money! | Cheap DIY Cleaners

Hey guys! I know for a lot people, including myself, switching to an all natural lifestyle can feel out of reach sometimes sheerly because of the price tag, but today I've got three extremely cheap swaps for conventional cleaners! With price comparisons and easy recipes at the end, so let's get into it!

Conventional vs Natural

****All prices are from walmart.com with my local Arizona zip code put into consideration, prices may vary depending on location but I bet you these natural products will beat out conventional cleaners in your area as well! *****

Window Cleaner vs Vinegar
128 oz (gallon) bottle of window cleaner is a $11.28 vs a 128 oz bottle of vinegar is only $2.48 cents!
That makes the window cleaner .08 cents per oz and the vinegar .02 cents per oz!

Bleach vs Hydrogen Peroxide
121 oz bottle of bleach is $3.97 vs 4 bottles of 32 oz (128 oz total) of hydrogen peroxide are 98 cents each, in total $3.96!
That makes the bleach .032 cents per oz vs hydrogen peroxide .031 cents per oz

Disinfectant Spray vs Rubbing Alcohol

32 oz disinfectant $2.27 vs 2 16 oz bottles of rubbing alcohol (32 oz total) are .88 cents each, in  total only $1.76!
That makes the disinfectant spray .07 cents per oz and rubbing alcohol .05 cents per oz

Recipes!
These DIY recipes will make your dollar stretch even more by only using small amounts of the natural cleaners!
DIY Window Cleaner: Fill and old spray bottle with half water and half vinegar and use as normal.
DIY "Bleach": Personally I just pour half a cup of hydrogen peroxide right into the washer machine but to make your money really work for you, you can use an old gallon  jug and fill with 1 and 1/2 cup of hydrogen peroxide, 1/2 a cup of lemon juice and fill the rest with water. Use 1/2 to 1 cup in each load and wash as normal.
DIY Disinfectant Spray: Fill an old spray bottle with 1/4 cup rubbing alcohol and the rest with water, optional 1 tbsp full of natural dish soap to aid in scrubbing grime and use as normal!

Thanks for stopping by! Please share this post with your friends and family!

Summer 2017 Vacation Blog | 5 Things that Turned a Simple & Affordable Vacation into the Best Time of my Life!

This past week my family and I did a quick 5 hour drive to San Diego, CA and surprisingly it was better than the more elaborate vacations I've had in the past; here's why!

(1) THE PEOPLE- What made this vacation so great was the fact that I got some quality time with my family. Adrian (my boyfriend) and I are often both so busy with work, it was great to get some time away to relax and show our five year old that the world is so much bigger than just Phoenix, AZ and that there is so much to do and see!
(2) THE MINDSET-  A lot of my previous vacations my mind would still be at home worried about work or school. This vacation I was determined to kick back and relax. so I cut out all of the bulls****. I packed only the essentials and we hit the road! We made sure to finish up anything work related before we left. And it worked! I found my self laughing more than I have in awhile and not worrying about the small stuff.
(3) THE HOTEL- We stayed at the beautiful Dana at Mission Bay which is surprisingly a Best Western Hotel it's part of the Best Western premier collection. We always try to stay at Best Western's because any of the points you earn with their rewards program never expire and they have such a great range of options. From a super cheap motel for a business trip to hotels for resort style vacations they seriously seem to offer it all!
(4) THE FOOD- The beauty of San Diego is there is hundreds of delicious restaurants waiting to be discovered on yelp! This trip we had so much good food! Here's some of our favorites:
The Mission Cafe

The Menu

La Playa Taco Shop

(5)THE ACTIVITIES-  This trip we made sure to only plan one major thing and go with the flow for the rest of the vacation. So we planned to take our 5 year old to Sea World one day and just hangout at the beach on the rest of the days! Sea World was amazing it was his first time there and our first time since we were kids! We also visited Mission Beach and my favorite beach of all Ocean Beach.
Ocean Beach, San Diego, California

WHAT WE'VE LEARNEDDuring this trip Adrian and I had time to not only relax but to evaluate our life.We got rejuvenated and inspired to pursue our passions in life ,head on.We're both working towards growing our businesses and eventually being able to work for ourselves and work from home full time. So thanks for tuning in and helping our dreams get one step closer to reality! Comment below your favorite vacation spot and tell us what your lifelong dream is and always remember "every morning you have two choices: continue to sleep with your dreams or wake up and chase them."
XOXO

Natural DIY All Purpose Cleaner | One Product to Clean the Whole House?!

What if I told you, you can make one product that can clean your whole house? What if I told you it was easy, all natural, and cheaper than conventional cleaners? Would you jump for joy, smile with mild excitement or skeptically believe me? Well whatever your reaction is folks, I've got the hook up for you today!

Alright here is what we are going to need:
-Spray bottle ( preferably glass or stainless steel because it can safely hold essential oils, unlike plastic which breaks up and can possibly leak toxins when in contact with essential oils for too long, but use what you have!)
Here's a link for the one I use:

- Water
- White Vinegar ( if you have granite counter tops replace with rubbing alcohol)
- Dish Soap ( Try to use a non toxic dish soap or castile soap but whatever soap you have on hand is fine)
- Lemon and/or Tea tree essential oil, optional

Directions:
1. Flll your spray bottle halfway with vinegar ( only use about 1/4 cup if you're using rubbing alcohol)
2.add a few drops of dish soap ( roughly 1 tbsp )
3. Fill the remainder with water
4. optional step add 10-20 drops of essential oil
5. Screw on lid and mix up.This mix is good for 1-3 months
6. Spray on surface and allow to sit for 3-5 minutes ( to give the product time to do its job! )

How can this clean my whole house?
Well the acidity in vinegar is a great natural disinfectant, and the dish soap is great for any stuck on grime and if you add the essential oils lemon can help to brighten and disinfect and tea tree oil is antimicrobial; I've also noticed tea tree oil can help keep bugs away,Score! So get to spraying your kitchen countertops, your bath tubs,  toilets, dining room tables etc!!
Comment below your favorite all natural cleaners!

An Easy DIY- All Natural Air Freshener!

Hey natural babes! Today I present you with an easy, inexpensive and fun DIY. Let's replace those traditional and toxic air fresheners, with something all natural and made from scratch! Traditional air fresheners are filled with several different toxins and the worst of them all being synthetic fragrance. Synthetic fragrance is a known carcinogen and has been believed to cause things like cancer, ADD, and much more over time (see research references below). I don't know about you but, I definitely want a great smelling home but also air that is safe to breathe! So Let's get this recipe goin'!

 Here's what you'll need:
-A glass or stainless steel spray bottle. For this project it is preferable we refrain from the use of a plastic spray bottle as we will be using essential oils (which when in contact with plastic can cause deterioration or damage to the plastic bottle).
( here's a link to the spray bottle I use)

- A tbsp of baking soda
- 6-8 drops of your favorite essential oil. For this one I'm going with three drops sweet orange and three drops grapefruit for a fresh and fruity scent.
Some other great essential oil combos are:
Clove, cinnamon, and vanilla
Lavender and lemon
Tea tree and sweet orange
Have fun make it your own!
-Water

Here's the directions:
1. Pre Mix the baking soda and essential oils together ( this is definitely crucial, as the oil and water won't mix together well )
2. Pour this baking soda mixture in your spray bottle
3. Fill the rest with water
4.Screw on the top and shake the bottle, dance a little, have your kids help shake it up; just go crazy!
5. And bam! There you go! You just made a great smelling and toxic free air freshener! Now feel free spray that stuff all over our house knowing that it works great and is safe for you and your family!

Thanks for stopping by! Please share this post with your friends and family!
