My July Favorites | Natural, Health & Lifestyle Favorites! | July 2017 Favorites

Hi there Natural Babes! Since July is coming to a close I wanted to share my July favorites, aka all of the things I've been loving this month! From products, podcasts, and foods there are quite a few fun things on this list! So grab your favorite drink and a snack, kick back and enjoy! Make sure to comment down below some of your favorite items for the month of July!

Food

Hands down my favorite recipe this month was a chicken recipe I found on pinterest. The recipe is for garlic and paprika chicken drumsticks and it's best served with yellow rice (try to make the rice from scratch to avoid the preservatives that are in the store bought one) and steamed veggies! So easy and so good, here's the link!

Drinks

-Pure Leaf Tea, Tea House Collection
This month I just discovered that Pure Leaf Tea now has a collection of USDA Organic tea's that come in glass bottles! This tea has definitely been my go to drink this month and since it's from such a popular brand it is easily accessible. I was able to get this tea at my local Walgreens and gas station!
- Apple Cider Vinegar
So.. taste wise this is definitely not my favorite, but apple cider vinegar has so many health benefits that it is definitely worth including into my daily routine and I'm glad I did! Apple cider vinegar is known to detox the body, help with acid reflux, balance your blood sugar, lower pH, aid in weight loss, cleanse candida, whiten teeth and the list goes on (reference 1-see below)! I like to buy organic apple cider vinegar that is unfiltered and "with the mother" to get all of the health benefits that apple cider vinegar has to offer. I've found that buying store brand, drastically cuts the cost! This month my boyfriend & I have been trying to take a shot of apple cider vinegar every morning.
  Here's the exact recipe:
2 tsp apple cider vinegar
1 tsp turmeric (which also has amazing health benefits)
then we drink 1/2 a cup of orange juice directly after to help with the taste.

Listen

I have found myself listening to podcasts in the month of July more than I ever have before. Podcasts are great for several reasons, they are free and perfect if you don't have much time but are still interested in learning about something new. This month my go-to podcast has been the Healthy Mom's Podcast! Katie, the host is an amazing mom of 6 and she interviews professionals in the natural health field about all types of topics ranging from fitness, essential oils, diet and living a non toxic lifestyle. Weather you're a momma or not I think everyone can take away something from this amazing podcast.
Check it out here: Healthy Moms Podcast

DIY

Surprisingly I did quite a few DIY's this month, okay maybe not so surprising but definitely fun! ;) One of my favorite DIY's I did this month was a simple and inexpensive decor piece for my bedroom. I decided to go with fake eucalyptus because I wasn't too sure how the real thing would hold up but even with buying the fake version this DIY cost me under $10! I was able to get the wooden rod from Home Depot for under $2, the floral wire and the thin rope from Dollar Tree and the eucalyptus from Michaels Craft Store
Here is the link to the inspiration and the full directions: DIY Inspiration & Directions

Products

-Dr.Bronner's Lavender Castile Soap
Now I have used Dr. Bronner's before and castile soap in general but I usually go with the unscented version; and wow have I been missing out! The lavender smell of this is amazing and castile soap in general is very versatile. We've been using this soap as body wash, face wash, and hand soap and bonus it is all natural and synthetic fragrance free!

- Charcoal Air Purifiers
I bought these at the beginning of the month and have been loving them since! Charcoal has been known to cleanse the air of several toxins like formaldehyde, ammonia, and benzene that are often emitted from paint, flooring and other components of your home (2). The bonus to these bamboo charcoal air purifiers is that they are very inexpensive and one of the easiest ways I've found to improve air quality.

Watch

I have loved the youtube channel Femmehead for a little over a year now, but this month I've found myself binge watching Victoria's videos! She has a great channel that has a range of topics from minimalism, tips on going vegan, natural living, zero waste and one of my favorite aspects on her channel are her in depth videos on women's reproductive health ( ie tracking your cycle, natural birth control options, and ways to naturally deal with and reduce PMS) she's got a great personality and is truly inspirational. Seeing her successfully run her own business on Youtube and on her blog has truly inspired me to pursue my dreams and create The Natural Babe Blog.  Here is one of my favorite videos from her channel (3) and here's a link to her channel directly. FemmeHead Youtube Channel

Essential Oils

I have two essential oils that I have really been loving this month and the great part about these two is they are highly effective, versatile and they are both very inexpensive essential oils! This month I have been loving grapefruit essential oil and orange essential oil. Grapefruit essential oil is great for disinfecting surfaces, cleansing the body, curbing sugar cravings, reducing depression and has been a holy grail for me at reducing cramps (4). I love to use a few drops of grapefruit essential oil directly on my back or my stomach to reduce cramps and backaches. My boyfriend got me into orange essential oil just recently, we were looking at our essential oil reference book one night (get it here: essential oil pocket reference) and I was reading off the health benefits of orange essential oils and he encouraged me to try orange essential oil out! It is an amazing essential oil and it is great for boosting immunity, disinfecting wounds, alleviating anger and depression, reducing inflammation and so much more (5).
If you're curious about learning more about essential oils check out one of my latest blog post all about them! What are essential oils & essential oil uses

Well there we have it! Those are all the thing I've been loving in the month of July! What are some of things you've found yourself obsessed with this month? Comment down below!

10 Things to Toss Today! | Minimalist Series

Hi everyone! I hope you all had a great weekend! For this week's blog post I wanted to continue our minimalist series and talk about 10 things you can toss from your life today, with no regrets! Let's get into it!

1. Junk mail & expired coupons.

2. Out of date food, or food you know you just won't eat.

Now for this one I would suggest donating to your local food drive. I know a lot of food banks take canned food up to 1 year after the expiration date so definitely throw it all in a box and make sure it goes to good use! I've linked Feeding America's food bank locator, so you can find one near you! food bank locator

3. Pens that don't work or pencils that are no longer usable.

4. Old magazines!

Cut out your address and bring them to your doctor's office! All the bored patients waiting to be seen will be very grateful!

5. Clothes that don't fit or you haven't worn in a year.

We all have those clothes that just crowd up our closet and honestly when we think about it we don't even like them or they aren't flattering anymore. Toss um' straight into that Goodwill pile and if you don't have time to drop them off schedule a free Goodwill pickup! ( lazy person score!)

6. Broken kids toys.

I was seriously surprised by how many broken or missing pieces toys my stepson had in his toy box! Toss um'!

7. Expired medicine.

8. Old linens.

Raggedy towels, torn sheets, blankets you no longer need! Get rid of them with no shame!

9. Almost everything in your junk drawer.

Today I challenge you to finally open that extremely packed drawer and only keep the useful items! ( p.s. that means no more Taco Bell sauce or parmesan cheese packets 😉

10. Last on today's list, bath & shower products you just didn't like!

While I was switching my home over to all natural products I had a lot of bath and body products that I just wasn't interested In using anymore but I didn't want them to go to waste! So I put them all in a box even if they were already opened and posted them on Offer Up / Craigslist for free. I explained my situation and several families who needed products like these were happy to take them off my hands!

There we go! 10 things you can toss today without any regrets! Comment down below some things you want to declutter from your life! Please share this post with your friends & family!

Essential Oils | What are Essential Oils & Essential Oil Uses and Benefits

Hi everyone! I know that on my blog I've talked a little bit about essential oils and I know that they are very popular all over social media right now. People have been using essential oils as an all natural alternative to several conventional and toxic products we are used to using on a day to day basis. So today I wanted to write a blog post about what essential oils are and I wanted to share a few of the many essential oil uses and benefits! Let's get straight into it!

What is an Essential Oil?

An essential oil is the oil that is extracted from a plant, the oil can be extracted several different ways some of which include steam distillation and cold pressing. Extracting oil from a plant gives all of the benefits of that plant at a very concentrated dosage, for example it takes 75 lemons to make one 15ml bottle of lemon essential oil ( Reference 1- see below). So all of the benefits normally associated with lemon (aka great for detox, helps with weight loss, and can improve mood) are also associated with lemon essential oil; making it easier to use and more effective than just using the plant itself. This is especially true for essential oils like lavender or eucalyptus, you can reap of the benefits from these plants just by using the essential oils (no need for a full grown garden here).

Essential Oil Uses

There is literally hundreds of uses for essential oils but today I am going to touch on the three main ways I use essential oils.

1. Diffuse

Diffusing Essential oils is probably the easiest way to use essential oils and one of the most effective. An essential oil diffuser is similar to a humidifier but it uses cold water and depending on the essential oils you put it your diffuser you can not only scent your home but also purify and deodorize the air. Some of my favorite essential oil blends to diffuse are lemon & lavender, orange & tea tree, and stress away & lavender.  Diffusers are a great non toxic replacement for candles and air fresheners. I've link'd below a budget friendly diffuser and a diffuser that will go along great with any home decor you already have!

2. Clean

As you guys probably know by now cleaning is one of my favorite ways to use essential oils! Several essential oils are known to be antifungal, antibacterial and great for removing grime and disinfecting (2) (some great ones for cleaning are tea tree oil, peppermint and thieves blend)! Just add a few essential oils to any diy cleaner for an added punch! I've linked not only my all purpose cleaner recipe below but also a few other great essential oil cleaning recipes, check them out:

My All Purpose Cleaner Recipe     Tub & Shower Cleaner Recipe     DIY Grease Cleaner
Carpet Powder Recipe     Natural Lysol Wipes      Natural Glass Cleaner

3. Apply Topically

Now applying essential oils directly to your skin is a great way to get health benefits out of your essential oils. Just make sure when you do you also blend the essential oil with what's called a carrier oil ( ie coconut oil, olive oil, almond oil, etc) to insure that the essential oil is properly diluted and won't irritate the skin. Each essential oil has several health benefits and the best way to know what each oil is good for is to either simply search the health benefits of a particular oil or to have a guide book as kind of a one stop shop for all the medical information regarding essential oils, I've linked the reference book below that I use. Here are some great ways to use essential oils topically:
Fill a roll-on bottle almost completely full with the carrier oil of your choice and then add the  appropriate drops of each oil for the following recipes.
For headaches relief: 10 drops peppermint, 10 drops lavender, and 5 drops frankincense shake together in the roller ball and apply a little bit directly your forehead when needed.
For allergy relief: 20 drops lemon, 20 drops lavender, 20 drops peppermint and 5 drops Copaiba shake together in the roll-on bottle and apply a little bit directly to your chest when needed.
For back pain relief: 10 drops peppermint, 10 drops panaway and 5 drops Copaiba shake together in the roll-on bottle and apply a little bit directly to your back when needed.

My Favorite Essential Oils & Their Benefits

I have three essential oils that are my go to's and they are some great ones to get started with!

1. Lemon

Lemon is not only one of the less expensive essential oils it is also known to purify the air, remove toxins from the body, disinfect surfaces, help with digestion, brighten whites, repel insects, clear nasal passages, eliminate dandruff, and the list goes on! ( 2, 3,4)

2. Lavender

Lavender is definitely one of the best smelling essential oils and of course it's list of benefits is jam packed! Lavender has been know to help with sleep and relaxation, reduce acne and acne scars, helps heal minor burns and bruises, improves eczema and psoriasis. (2,5)

3. Thieves

Thieves essential oil is a blend of several essential oils (Clove, Lemon,  Cinnamon, Eucalyptus, and Rosemary). The old wives tale goes that thieves essential oil got its name from the thieves that used this blend of spices to prevent them from getting sick as they stole from the dead during the era of the plague (slightly creepy but also very interesting!). Now that being said thieves is known to prevent the cold and flu from spreading, has anti inflammatory properties,  antibacterial, aid in respiratory health, aid in weightloss, antiseptic, and so much more! (5, 6)

Where Can I Buy Essential Oils?

Now personally I recently switched over to using Young Living Essential Oils and have even recently become a distributor for them because I believe in their product that much! I love using Young Living Essential Oils because they are in control over the whole process from growing the plants and herbs themselves, creating the oils and even packaging. They are also known for having 3rd parties test their essential oils to prove their purity (meaning they are just the oil from the plant no additives or synthetics). But I encourage you to do your own research and pick the best essential oil company for you. Just make sure the essential oils that you are buying are 100% pure essential oils, you definitely don't want to be using something that claims to be an essential oil but is actually filled with chemicals.

If you're interested in starting your essential oil journey Young Living has a great essential oil starter kit that comes with a set of 10 great essential oils, a diffuser, samples and other resources. It's pretty cool too not only is this kit cheaper than buying all these essential oils individually but when you buy a startkit it's almost like you're buying a Sam's Club or Costco membership but for life! After the kit any oil you buy from them will be automatically 24% off retail price! Score!
Here's a link to join and buy a starter kit: YOUNG LIVING KIT & MEMBERSHIP

Happy Friday everyone! I thought to kick start the weekend, I would share my 5 favorite Netflix films on health & natural living to help give you ideas of what to watch during a Netflix binge session! If you watch any of these, please feel free to post it on social media and tag The Natural Babe Blog, I would love to know what you guys think! Let's get into it!

1. Fat, Sick & Nearly Dead

A man who is obese and dealing with autoimmune disease takes us along on his journey as he only drinks green juice for 60 days. They also came out with a sequel called Fat, Sick & Nearly Dead 2 which also a very good film! Here's the trailer for both films!

2. The Human Experiment

This documentary is probably one of my favorites on the list! The Human Experiment explains the dangers of all the untested chemicals in our cleaning and home products and explains how companies aren't legally required to label these on their products! If you watch any of these films I would definitely watch this.

3. GMO OMG

You guys, I'm currently watching this one as I  work on this blog post and it's blowing my mind! Everyone definitely needs to watch this! This documentary explains what Genetically Modified Organism's are and how harmful they are to us and our families.

4. Super Size Me

Now this one is definitely a classic but so good! In this film we follow one man's journey as he eats only the largest size possible size at Mcdonald's for a month and they document the outcome.

5. Food, INC

Lastly, Food INC is also an amazing documentary about how large companies control every aspect of our food and the dangerous practices that happen during the making of our food.

Well there you have it! Those are my 5 health and natural living Netflix Favorites! Comment down below some of your favorite Netflix documentaries! Please also share this post on social media with your friends and family!

Why Owning Less is so Beneficial | Minimalist Series

"Maybe the life you've always wanted is buried under everything you own."- Joshua Becker.

Hey guys, I know minimalism has really grown in popularity over the last few years and with good reason. Today I wanted to share a few reasons why owning less is so beneficial and why this is a bandwagon you've got to jump on! Let's get into it!

Less Stress

One of the most important reasons to become a minimalist is you'll be less stressed! When you have less clutter around you and less possessions crowding up your space you begin to relax a little more and your mind will feel more clear and refreshed!

Less Cleaning & Maintaining

Think about it if you own less dishes that is less dishes that you need to wash, if  you own less clothes that's less clothes you have to fold, if you own less trinkets it's less dusting you have to do, etc. Personally this is my favorite benefit of being a minimalist!

More Time

Not only will you have more time with the reduced amount of cleaning and maintaining you'll be doing but you also won't have to spend as much time shopping or organizing. When you only have a short list of things you need to buy or only a few things to organize it really frees up your day for more important things; like spending quality time with your friends and family. Score!

Extra Money

You heard me right people! Extra money! When you stop buying so many physical possessions or even start selling your old possessions you find yourself with more money for vacations, paying off debt, concert tickets, comedy shows, taking classes, etc.

Good for the Kids

Being a minimalist and implementing that in your children's lives can be really beneficial for them as well. Minimalism teaches kids to learn that money doesn't buy happiness, to get more creative, to appreciate what they have and to only surround themselves with things that are practical or bring them joy.

Well there you have it! There are just a few of the several benefit of minimalism! Please share this with your friends and family, the share on social media buttons are below! Thank you so much!

What Does it Mean to Be a Natural Babe? | 5 Tips to Becoming a Happier & Healthier You

Hey everyone! I hope you guys had a good week! Comment down below what your favorite part of this week was! I know some of you who follow me on social media might have seen a post or two quickly mentioning what it means to be a "Natural Babe" But I wanted to explain a little more about what it means to be a Natural Babe and give you 5 practical tips to implement in your everyday life to become one!

What does it Mean to be a Natural Babe?

A Natural Babe is someone who takes charge of their health by getting rid of the toxins in their homes, workplaces and their bodies in general. A Natural Babe is also someone who gets creative at problem solving and doesn't let their current circumstances stand in their way of creating a healthy life for themselves and their families. Most importantly they are someone who is confident in themselves and everything they have to offer! Today I thought I would give you 5 quick tips to not only become a Natural Babe yourself but to become a happier and healthier you in general! LET'S GO!

1. Remove the Toxins

By this I not only mean the toxic products in our home ( i.e conventional shampoos, soaps, laundry products, etc.) but I also mean toxic relationships. If you currently have "friends", a significant other, acquaintances or who ever in your life that aren't supporting you or bringing you joy; you're better off without them!

2. Get More Sleep

Seriously sleep is key to being happier and healthier! "Poor sleep can contribute to weight gain, headaches, high blood pressure, diabetes, depression, an impaired immune system, and attention deficit disorder" ( Reference 1-see below). If it's hard to get more sleep one of my favorite tips I've heard from other moms is "nap when your kids are napping"! Now if your kids are older or you don't have kids at all just try going to sleep a little earlier, it will really make a difference!

3. Drink More Water

I know for a lot of people including myself we already know that we need to be drinking more water but this can be challenging and even boring at times. So I found some recipes to take water to the next level, Check them out!
fruit infused water

4. Laugh More

Now this may seem cheesy but laughing really does make a big difference. "research has shown that laughing can improve immunity, help regulate blood sugar levels, and improve sleep"(2). So get out there and laugh! Spend some time with your funniest friend or even watch a stand up comedy show on Netflix, My boyfriend and I recently watched Plastic Cup Boyz with Kevin Hart and it had us laughing non-stop!

5. Get up & Move!

Exercise, now this is the area that I definitely struggle with the most. This last tip is not only for your guys but also a reminder for myself to get out there and move! We all already know that exercise makes us feel better and helps our body release toxins; so go walk, run, jump just get moving and let's all make it a goal this year to get and stay fit!

Thanks for tuning in for today's blog! Please share this with your friends and family and follow my Pinterest for more tips on natural living, health and happiness!

Inexpensive & Natural Swaps- Laundry Products | Swap it Out Series #1!

Hey Natural Babes! I hope you're having a good weekend! Comment down below what you are up on the first weekend of July '17! Today I'm starting this new series called Swap it Out, basically I will show you some inexpensive and natural alternatives to the conventional and toxic products most of us use on a day to day basis. This week's post is all about laundry products, I'll explain why it's important to stop using conventional laundry products and of course what to use or even what to make instead, check it out!

So Why Should you Switch your Laundry Products?

Conventional Laundry products are full of chemicals that are very harmful to all of us. You might be thinking that, "its just laundry soap it's not like I'm drinking or eating these products"' but these products are being absorbed onto our skin and into the air around us. It has been found that our skin absorbs 60% of what is put on it (Reference 1- see below) and with laundry products that are designed to linger and make our clothes "smell fresh" this isn't a good thing. A study done in 2011 by University of Washington found that after testing the top selling laundry products, “Five of the six products emitted one or more carcinogenic ‘hazardous air pollutants,’ which are considered by the Environmental Protection Agency to have no safe exposure level,” said study author Anne Steinemann." (2). Not to mention a lot of laundry products have synthetic fragrance in them as well and as we learned last week synthetic fragrance can also cause several health issues over time (check out the blog post here if you missed it: my scented products are harmful? | the truth about synthetic fragrance).

*** Before swapping products I recommend washing your washing machine to remove any left over toxins from previous products. To do this add a cup of white vinegar in your washer basin and run the hottest and longest cycle and if you have a front loading washer machine make sure to take out the soap tray and wash it as well.***

Laundry Soap Swaps

So there are actually quite a few natural and well priced laundry soap options, I'll start with the more "expensive" one first (which is still very close in price to conventional products) and work our way to the crazy cheap option! Let's go!
1. Ecos Lavender Laundry Soap- Now this is the one I personally use, I find it super easy and works great on stains! If you have a membership at Sam's Club or maybe Costco they will have the best price on this. I am able to get a huge 250 loads bottle for around $15! If you don't have a membership to one of these places amazon has a pretty good deal on Ecos Laundry Soap as well for around $20 for 200 loads; just be weary of some of the other scents this line offers as they are scented with synthetic fragrance.

2. Soap Nuts
Yep you heard me right! Basically soap nuts are fruit that you just throw in your washer and wash as normal! The cool thing about these is they can be used over and over again! For up to 100 loads at only $10.99, these are a pretty good deal! I have yet to try this option but I have watched several review videos and the general consensus is they work great but are not the best on stains, so if you've got an extra grimy garment I would just make sure to pre-treat with the stain remover swap I have listed below!

3. DIY Laundry Soap
This is by far the best priced option! This recipe I found is $20.75 for 320 loads!!
Check it out here: natural homemade laundry detergent

Fabric Softener/ Dryer Sheets

1. Wool Dryer Balls
wool dryer balls & essential oils

These are my personal favorite! You just throw 3-4 balls in your dryer and they not only help cut down drying time but also soften your clothes! For an optional added scent put one or two drops of the essential oil of your choice on the ball before throwing in the dryer. Now these cost the most up front but they literally last forever (unless they are lost in that mountain high pile of "to fold" laundry). I've link'd below the best priced ones on amazon at only $8.81 for a 6 pack and similar wool dryer balls to the really pretty ones that I have pictured above (not as well priced but, too adorable!) cute wool dryer balls.

2. Seventh Generation Fabric Softener Sheets
I love this option they are a pretty good price (just $4.99) and easy to just throw in with your laundry!

3. White Vinegar
You can get a gallon at Walmart for under $3! Use 1/3 cup and just add to the basin of your washer machine it will not only soften your clothes but also get rid of any foul odors! If you're not a fan of the smell of vinegar, adding a drop or two of essential oils always helps as well!

Stain Remover

For stains I've got one go to recipe that works amazing and bonus it's extremely cheap!
stain remover must haves
1. DIY stain remover
Fill a dark colored bottle (hydrogen peroxide won't work in a clear or light colored bottle it loses its effectiveness when exposed to light) half with hydrogen peroxide and half water then add about 1 tbsp of dish soap. Spray on the soiled area, scrub with a brush and wash as normal!
